The well-known artist couple, filmmaker Susan Stern and comics
artist/writer Spain Rodriguez will present their work. Stern is acclaimed for
her films including "Barbie Nation" and "The Self-Made Man". Spain is
famous for his comic character Trashman and for his role in founding the
underground Comix movement of the 1960s. Film clips will be included in
the presentation.
Susan Stern directed the cult classic documentary "Barbie Nation: An
Unauthorized Tour," which played in film festivals and art houses and on
television around the world. "Barbie Nation" won the Golden Spire for
documentary at the San Francisco International Film Festival, aired on
PBS's P.O.V. series and has become standard viewing in college
classrooms studying American culture and sexuality.
"The Self-Made Man," Susan's second film, made its festival debut at
the South by Southwest festival in March 2005 and will screen at the Full
Frame Documentary Film Festival in April. It will air on PBS's P.O.V.
on July 26, 2005. The Self-Made Man was produced in association with
ITVS and KQED Public Television, with funding provided by the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting.
Before making films, Susan was an investigative reporter and poet. Her
award-winning articles were published in the Boston Globe, Sacramento
Bee, San Francisco Examiner, and the Oakland Tribune. The Wall Street
Journal credited her Tribune expos of politically-motivated Navy base
closures with "saving thousands of local jobs." Susan was a member of the
Berkeley Poets Coop and won the University of California's Ina Mae
Coolbrith Poetry Award.
Biographical Information
Both R. Crumb and the late Harvey Kurtzman have called SPAIN Rodriquez
"one of the top ten action comic book creators in the world."
'Trashman' is probably Rodriguez' best known and most enduring character in the
comics underground. His style could be called a "bold line" style of
drawing. As Rodriguez's work is always in demand, he is still working on
various magazines like Zap, Twistgrip and Blab magazine. He also had
his work published in comix like Insect Fear, Anarchy Comics, Arcade, San
Francisco Comic Book and Tales of the Leather Nun. He was one of the
founders of the United Cartoon Workers of America. One of his more recent
comics is 'Nightmare Alley'. In 1994, the autobiographical 'My True
Story' was published. Nominated for a Harvey Award in 2004, Spain's "Dark
Hotel" is currently featured on Salon Magazine's website.
